About Trudy K. Woodard, LPC

Congratulations on making the courageous first step!  Finding a therapist you connect with can feel a bit overwhelming and scary.  Are you curious about new ways to approach the challenges in your life? All our life experiences represent building blocks of who we are today, yet they do not have to define who we aspire to be tomorrow. I support and encourage an honest relationship-based approach to psychotherapy where we work together to explore concerns and issues most important to you in a nonjudgmental space.  Do we mesh yet?  Let me tell you a little bit more about myself, where I’ve been, what I’ve learned, and where I’d like to go. As in any relationship, it is important to get to know one another, so I’ll go first.

Although, I was not born here in Colorado, my entire extended family and parents were, and Colorado Springs is where I call home.  I reside with my husband of 14 years.  We have six Pembroke Welsh Corgis and their names are; Ava, Emma, Rubie, Brinkley, Hemingway, Bogart, and one German Short Hair Pointer named Levi. And yes, I know who is who!  Together, we love to be outdoors hiking, playing and relaxing as much as possible.   We are a blended family with two boys and one daughter with two grandchildren.

My Journey to Evidence-Based Counseling

As a child of an enlisted military father, most of my life growing up was spent traveling all over the world.  My father received orders to relocate every two -three years and as a family, we left everything and everyone behind to start new beginnings in foreign places.  While not easy, I am grateful for those experiences that immersed me into various cultures and people, which opened my heart for deeper understanding of who we are as humans.

Since a young age, I have always been interested in the wellbeing and uniqueness of those around me. I feel the opportunities provided to me as a child and as an adult helped me gain an appreciation of diversity and an empathic view of others.

So, I went on to get the training and education I needed in order to become a therapist, gaining lots of experience along the way.  I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ashford University and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.  I worked as a volunteer fire fighter/EMT-B and definitely have a deep appreciation for our first-responders.  I worked in a crisis walk-in center, a crisis stabilization unit, and domestic violence/youth shelter non-profit agencies.  For a period of time, I worked as military counselor, and given my history, can empathize for the unique struggles of active duty soldiers and their families.  I have worked across the lifespan and with a broad range of issues, however working with adolescents has always been a passion of mine.  I believe in an evidence-based approach when working with individuals struggling with thoughts of suicide, depression, grief/loss, trauma, anxiety and related issues.

Since Becoming a Licensed Counselor

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, LPC.  I am also a Board-Certified Counselor with NBCC (National Board-Certified Counselor, Inc.).  I am an EMDRIA trained Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, and a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist.  I am a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and American Mental Health Counselor Associations.  While I use a person-centered approach, I believe in first-line treatments that have been shown to be effective in helping individuals.  I am extensively trained in EMDR, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy and use these interventions often.  I believe that learning is life-long and do my best to attend conferences, seminars, and workshops to keep on top of my skills and updates in the field of psychology/clinical mental health.
